Following the events of October 7, 2023, hundreds of Palestinian families from Gaza, who had been in the West Bank mainly for medical treatment, became stranded and unable to return home. In response, the Psychosocial Counseling Center for Women launched a support program for these families, with a special focus on women and children. The program included psychosocial support services, case management, and the provision of essential supplies.
At the same time, the Center’s legal team organized awareness sessions to introduce women to the legal procedures followed in Palestinian courts in case they need legal assistance. As part of the “Irada” Project, implemented through the Sawasya Program and funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Center held an extensive session with women from Gaza staying at the Retno Hotel.
During the session, participants learned about key aspects of the Personal Status Law in force in the West Bank, as well as the judicial circular issued by the Sharia Judicial Authority concerning the jurisdiction of West Bank courts in cases filed by people from Gaza. Also, explained the process of filing Sharia cases under the current difficult circumstances, with the aim of facilitating access to justice for citizens.
The discussion also highlighted the free legal services offered by the Center to women, particularly those from Gaza, and addressed the challenges related to the end of women’s stay at the Retno Hotel. Participants shared their perspectives on possible solutions alongside proposals from the Palestinian government.
At the close of the meeting, the women expressed their appreciation for the Palestinian government’s ongoing dialogue with them since the beginning of the war, stressing its efforts to find safe and dignified housing solutions.
This session is part of the Center’s broader efforts to empower women and strengthen their access to justice and protection services.
